Newborn Screening - State Status
Few states are providing comprehensive newborn screening (NBS) for maximum benefit to babies (meaning screening for 50+ disorders), and those that are the most inadequate are: ALABAMA, ARKANSAS, GEORGIA, KANSAS, KENTUCKY, LOUISIANA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW MEXICO, OKLAHOMA, RHODE ISLAND, TEXAS, WASHINGTON (STATE) AND WEST VIRGINIA. Volunteers are especially needed in these states. (See the state comparison tables by selecting either of these formats: simplified or PDF.) Please help! Choose one or more of the activities below. Every child deserves the healthiest possible start in life!

Public Service Announcement for TV
Distributors
Call local CBS TV stations. Ask to speak to the Community Relations Director. Tell them you volunteer for a nonprofit
organization that advocates saving babies through newborn screening. Tell them that actor Michael O’Leary of CBS’s “The Guiding
Light” is our spokesperson on the public service announcement. Ask them to air the 30-second tape around the time of “The Guiding
Light’s” airtime. When accepted, get the station’s mailing address for sending the tape, and email the address to
PSA for TV Manager or
call 610-251-9876. The tape will be mailed to the station.
See TV PSA details.
Tell the Media
Tell your family’s newborn screening story to the media. Ask them to include the Save Babies Through Screening Foundation's website www.savebabies.org in their report so that families can learn more about NBS. Description of this and other opportunities is here:
“word of mouth” opportunities. Ask for our “Tell the Media Program” brochure by writing to
Tell the Media.
