Disorders Screened in Vermont

Vermont does NOT provide the full panel of screenings recommended by Save Babies Through Screening Foundation. Parents should seek supplemental screening for the disorders and conditions not included in the state's panel.

The disorders that are screened, or likely to be detected, by your state's program are identified by the National Newborn Screening and Genetics Resource Center in simplified format or in PDF format.

General Information
Vermont expanded its newborn screening panel from 7 to 21 disorders effective November 1, 2003.  Vermont has a dissent form for parents who refuse screening (which are few in numbers).  UPS is used Monday-Friday to send samples to the lab in  Massachusetts.  Newborn screening brochures are utilized for new mother education.

Laboratory testing for Vermont is performed by the New England Newborn Screening Program, operated through the University of Massachusetts Medical School.  All newborn specimens drawn at birth hospitals in Vermont are sent by next day courier directly from the nurseries to the New England Newborn Screening Program.
