Disorders Screened in Tennessee
Tennessee does NOT provide the full panel of screenings recommended by Save Babies Through Screening Foundation. Parents should seek supplemental screening for the disorders and conditions not included in the state's panel.
The disorders that are screened, or likely to be detected, by your state's program are identified by the National Newborn Screening and Genetics Resource Center in simplified format or in PDF format.

Effective in July, 2004, the Tennessee Department of Health added to the number of disorders screened using tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS). The panel includes 34 disorders and certain variations of these disorders.
On January 12, 2004 , the Tennessee Department of Health added Homocystinuria (HCU), Maple Syrup Urine Disease (MSUD), and Medium Chain Acyl-CoA Dehydrogenase Deficiency (MCADD) to the list of genetic disorders for which all babies born in Tennessee are screened. The Department had recently purchased specialized equipment to enable the state laboratory to begin testing for more disorders. This equipment was expected to allow other tests to be added in the future.
Tennessee has approximately 75,000 births per year.
