New Jersey
Disorders
Screened in New Jersey
New Jersey does NOT mandate the full panel of screenings recommended by Save Babies Through Screening Foundation. Parents should seek supplemental screening for the disorders and conditions not included in the state's panel. Please note the General Information section below.
The disorders that are screened, or likely to be detected, by your state's program are identified by the National Newborn Screening and Genetics Resource Center in simplified format or in PDF format.

General
Information
New Jersey requires that parents be provided with information about supplemental newborn screening for disorders not screened by the state. A brochure with this information is to be given to the parent by the health care provider several months in advance of the baby's birth so that the parent has time to arrange for the additional screening through a private lab. The parent is to sign a form to acknowledge receipt of the supplemental newborn screening brochure.
In addition to the mandated disorders, Allen Bergum, Program Chief, Inborn Errors of Metabolism Laboratory, has set markers to detect non-mandated disorders. If detected, these are reported as “other” and referred for follow-up, with further referral to specialists if confirmed by follow-up.
Additionally, New Jersey reports other abnormal profiles which are not diseases:
- Hyperalimentation (TPN)
- Medium Chain Triglyceride (MCT) Oil Administration
- Presence of EDTA Anticoagulants in Blood Specimen
- Treatment with Benzoate or Valproic Acid
In October, 2003, the Commissioner of Health added organic acidemias to the newborn screening panel.
On April 16, 2001, New Jersey Governor Donald T. DiFrancesco signed an executive order adding 10 more disorders to the NJ newborn screening panel, making New Jersey the leader in the number of mandated disorders at that time. See the Governor's press release for the full story.
