Disorders Screened in Nevada
Nevada does NOT provide the full panel of screenings recommended by Save Babies Through Screening Foundation. Parents should seek supplemental screening for the disorders and conditions not included in the state's panel.

The disorders that are screened, or likely to be detected, by your state's program are identified by the National Newborn Screening and Genetics Resource Center in simplified format or in PDF format.

General Information
Nevada increased its screening panel to 25+ disorders on July 1, 2003, with the addition of tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS). Nevada, along with four other states (Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, and Oregon), participates in the regional newborn screening program provided by the Oregon State Newborn Screening Laboratory.

Background: As of January, 2001, Nevada was working on collecting newborn hearing screening data on the newborn heelstick screening form. This information was to be downloaded into a separate file based on a revised version of the birth defects registry system. Nevada received a CDC grant to develop and implement a statewide birth defects registry. They began in March of 2000, and in less than a year had almost an entire year of Las Vegas data in the system. Additional data was collected to see if there were any problems specific to Nevada; however, the data showed them to be within the national norms for the main defects. Based on the data collected, procedures would be revised to discontinue data collection on some of the registry disorders.

The Nevada data system was developed and planned with the intention of doing data matches with newborn screening, Children with Special Health Care Needs, birth certificates, Medicaid, foster children, and the Department of Education programs. This should enable the programs to better identify children in their care and provide early access to treatment. Nevada also applied for a Newborn Hearing Screening Grant in 2001.
