Disorders Screened in Montana
Montana does NOT provide the full panel of screenings recommended by Save Babies Through Screening Foundation. Parents should seek supplemental screening for the disorders and conditions not included in the state's panel.

The disorders that are screened, or likely to be detected, by your state's program are identified by the National Newborn Screening and Genetics Resource Center in simplified format or in PDF format.

General Information
Section 50-19-203 of the Montana Code Annotated mandates that each infant is administered tests designed to detect inborn metabolic errors as shall be required to be administered under rules adopted by the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services. As of June, 2003, the mandatory tests included congenital hypothyroidism, galactosemia, hemoglobinopathies, and phenylketonuria.

Existing newborn screening and follow-up services are funded in three ways: (1) test analysis is funded by fees; (2) monitoring of screening and diagnosis and reporting is funded from the state's allocation from the Title V Maternal and Child Health Block Grant; (3) follow-up with families and primary care physicians for PKU and Galactosemia is funded from the state's CSHCN allocation from the Title V Maternal and Child Health Block Grant.

About 11, 500 babies are born in Montana each year.

Newborn Screening Advisory Committee
Montana does not have a statutorily mandated Newborn Screening Advisory Committee (NBSAC), but rather convenes representatives from the medical community, state and federal agencies, the State Legislature and consumers on an ad hoc basis when conditions warrant.

From January through March, 2006, a Newborn Screening/Genetics Task Force underwent a facilitated meeting process to generate recommendations to the Department of Public Health and Human Services on the development and implementation of an appropriate continuum of newborn metabolic services for Montana. Consideration will be given to current capacity, available funding, who should provide each component of the service system, and how Montana can address the national charge to expand mandatory newborn screening and related services.
