Disorders Screened in Massachusetts
Massachusetts does NOT provide the full panel of screenings recommended by Save Babies Through Screening Foundation. Parents should seek supplemental screening for the disorders and conditions not included in the state's panel.

The disorders that are screened, or likely to be detected, by your state's program are identified by the National Newborn Screening and Genetics Resource Center in simplified format or in PDF format.

General Information
Laboratory testing for Massachusetts is performed by the New England Newborn Screening Program, operated through the University of Massachusetts Medical School. All newborn specimens drawn at birth hospitals in Massachusetts are sent by next day courier directly from the nurseries to the New England Newborn Screening Program.

A newborn screening booklet is given to parents in the birth hospital providing complete screening information and answers to frequently asked questions. Information on newborn screening is reviewed with parents prior to consent for screening. A verbal consent is given prior to testing.  The filter paper form provides parent documentation of the decline to CF and/or Metabolic screening and signature. There are pilot studies for additional optional screening.
