Disorders Screened in Maine
Maine does NOT provide the full panel of screenings recommended by Save Babies Through Screening Foundation. Parents should seek supplemental screening for the disorders and conditions not included in the state's panel.

The disorders that are screened, or likely to be detected, by your state's program are identified by the National Newborn Screening and Genetics Resource Center in simplified format or in PDF format.

General Information
The Maine Newborn Screening Advisory Committee (NBSAC) recommended in January, 2001, that the state mandate screening for Sickle Cell Disease and Hemoglobinopathies.  They also recommended that the state perform pilot study or an expanded MS/MS panel, with parental option to refuse, effective July 2001. Information provided in March, 2005, states that 99.8% of all families have accepted this testing.

Laboratory testing for Maine is performed by the New England Newborn Screening Program, operated through the University of Massachusetts Medical School. All newborn specimens drawn at birth hospitals in Maine are sent by next day courier directly from the nurseries to the New England Newborn Screening Program.
