Hawaii
Disorders Screened in Hawaii
Hawaii does NOT provide the
full panel of screenings recommended by Save Babies Through Screening Foundation
. Parents should seek
supplemental screening for the disorders and conditions not included
in the state's panel.
The disorders that are screened, or likely to be detected, by your state's program are identified by the
National Newborn Screening and Genetics Resource Center in simplified format or in
PDF
format.

General Information
Hawaii participates, along with four other states (Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and
Nevada), in the regional newborn screening program provided by the Oregon State Newborn Screening Laboratory. With the addition of cystic fibrosis to Hawaii's screening panel on September 1, 2007, the state now screens for a total of 32 metabolic disorders. Hearing loss is also tested.
BACKGROUND: In March, 2002,
Hawaii launched a pilot program to supplement the mandated disorders which were routinely screened at that time. (Those mandated
disorders were BD, CAH, Galactosemia, CH, MSUD, PKU, SCD Hemoglobinopathies.) Effective September 1, 2003, after concluding a
successful pilot, the state expanded its mandated panel to include the piloted disorders.
