Disorders Screened in Colorado
Colorado provides newborn screening for up to 49 of the 53 disorders per national recommendations as determined by the American College of Medical Genetics (ACMG). View the full panel of screenings recommended by Save Babies Through Screening Foundation.

Supplemental screening is available privately for the disorders and conditions not included in Colorado's panel.

The disorders that are screened, or likely to be detected, by your state's program are identified by the National Newborn Screening and Genetics Resource Center in simplified format or in PDF format.

General Information
Colorado announced that the Newborn Screening Laboratory would expand newborn screening, effective July 1, 2006, due to the use of tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS).

A prior bill submitted to the Governor's Office of State Planning and Budget for support of tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) had been defeated. (Jan. 2001)

The state received a 5-year grant linked to newborn hearing screening to assure that patients enter into proper follow-up. There is a similar component for the follow-up of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) and Hemoglobinopathies, as well as Phenylketonuria (PKU), with plans to phase in the other conditions as well. (Jan. 2001)

Colorado was having a significant number of false positives for Cystic Fibrosis (CF), so they convened a meeting of specialists who adjusted the laboratory analysis cutoffs, resulting in a 40-50% reduction in the number of false positives. (Jan. 2001)

Screening for Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH) was implemented by the state on August 1, 2000.

The Newborn Screening Program began in Colorado in 1979. In previous years, Colorado reported that the newborn screening program (6 conditions) cost approximately $990,000 per year. However, the identification of only 2 cases of Phenylketonuria (PKU) and 12 cases of hypothyroidism will save the state $2.5 million in lifetime costs for institutional care and special education.
