In 2000, the Save Babies Through Screening Foundation embarked on a project to establish consumer contacts in each state to serve as liaisons for our organization. We call this program Eye on Newborn Screening. The liaisons are referred to as State Monitors, and the plan is to establish 2-3 Monitors for each state. Presently, some of the Monitors are working in teams while others work as individuals, monitoring NBS status in their states and advocating for comprehensive newborn screening.
Available State Monitor Positions
State Monitor positions are available
in Alabama, Arkansas, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Utah, Vermont, and West Virginia.
Some other states can use additional Monitors.
State Monitor Activities
Some State Monitors serve on their state's NBS Advisory Committee or NBS Task Force and/or visit doctors and hospitals to promote newborn screening. State Monitors across the U.S.
have participated in
visiting their local newborn screening laboratories.
Responsibilities
The responsibilities of a State
Monitor can include:
- learning about the newborn screening program in your state and monitoring its progress
- becoming actively involved in your state's NBS program, such as becoming a member of your state's Newborn Screening Advisory Committee (NBSAC)
- organizing and leading other volunteers who want to help in your state
- answering questions from the lay public (such as people who contact our website) about your state's program
- providing regular email updates about what is going on in NBS in your state. We use the data you provide to keep the state information pages current. This information consists of updates to your state's screening program and news such as plans to enhance and/or expand screening. Most of this can be obtained by periodically calling your state department of health/newborn screening program administrator.
Save Babies Through Screening Foundation will help support your State Monitor role by providing resources and by being available to help answer any questions that you may have regarding you efforts.
Time Commitment
Time commitment for this position is
about 4-8 hours a month depending on how involved you become in the screening
program in your state.
If you are interested in volunteering to be a State Monitor, please write to the Volunteer Coordinator.
