The
Word of Mouth Challenge
Affected families
are asked to share their personal story in a word of mouth campaign. The next
time you see any of your friends, family, neighbors, co-workers or anyone else,
tell them about the need for supplemental newborn screening and use of overnight
services to transport their child’s NBS specimen. Then ask them to tell
someone too! This will ensure the
message never ends. Help
save babies by spreading three little letters – NBS!!!
Almost every family
whose child dies or is damaged from a disorder detectable through newborn
screening, and then learns that their child's suffering could have been
prevented, says, "If only I had known."
Help everyone you meet “know” about newborn screening and what it
could mean to their child’s life. Make sure everyone you meet knows what you
wished you would have known.
What
to say...
- WHAT?
Newborn screening is a routine test done on every baby born in the United States, however this routine testing may not be enough. As many physicians don’t know about the availability of this screening, parents will have to obtain full screening for all disorders them selves. They will need to obtain screening kits and take them to the doctor to have their child screened.
Most newborn screening tests are sent to the newborn screening laboratory by regular mail. This causes delays in the laboratory receiving the test. Parents should see that their child’s test is sent by same-day or overnight delivery services.
Older children and adults can have these disorders and have been fortunate enough not to have went into medical crisis . . . YET. They too can get screening through these supplemental laboratories
- WHY?
Even though these conditions may not sound familiar, they occur fairly frequently. Without early treatment, these conditions can cause irreversible mental retardation, physical disabilities and even death. BUT, with early detection enabled by comprehensive screening, most affected children babies will live normal, healthy lives. Screening allows PREVENTION and we all know that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
- HOW?
You can get the full screening by contacting a laboratory that offers supplemental screening. A listing of these laboratories can be found at here or by calling 1-888-4-LIFE-83.
