National Appreciation Campaign
In November 2000, the Save Babies Through Screening (then the Tyler For Life Foundation) embarked on a campaign to show appreciation to the dedicated professionals involved in newborn screening (NBS).  As November is a time of thanksgiving,  it was thought this would be the perfect month to kick off the Appreciation Campaign.

The campaign's goal is to show appreciation to all the people who work to see that newborn screening happens. Fifty NBS awareness pins were allotted  per state to be given to NBS personnel as a symbol of appreciation for all the life-saving, life-altering work that they do. These pins are attached to a special appreciation card that conveys our gratitude for their work.

Wording on the Appreciation Pin Card:
Please accept this NBS Awareness Lapel Pin as a token of our appreciation of your efforts to help protect children from unnecessary death, mental retardation and/or physical impairment from disorders detectable through newborn screening.  We are very grateful for your work in NBS.  Thank you very much for your diligent efforts to see that our children have the best chance possible. When you wear this pin, please think of all the lives you have touched and saved through NBS. Thank you for all you do in NBS.

SBTS is looking for more volunteers who will take the time to visit their state laboratories and NBS administrative offices to give out the pins. It is hoped that this will allow the NBS personnel to meet the people they touch everyday since all most of them see are filter paper cards with ID #’s. It is the hopes of SBTS that by having affected families deliver these tokens of appreciation, it will convey to them the sincere appreciation we have for all NBS staffs do to help our children and put faces behind the cards.

Many volunteers have been helpful enough to visit their state's program and give out the pins.  Several volunteers have taken the time to send in pictures and a summary from their visit to the newborn screening programs.
