American Baby’s Baby Faire
Dallas, Texas, May 17-18, 2003

Note: This is an account of a past Baby Faire. Since this event, more baby and health fairs have been opportunities for running similar exhibits in which volunteers have promoted newborn screening to throngs of people.

There was a flood of people passing through the American Baby's Baby Faire providing the booth crew with an opportunity to educate the masses. Laura Clow and Theresa Murry were among the crew running the booth. The baby faire was a productive and informative venture for many.

Some of the people they reached included a pediatric nurse who had a booth at the same fair; a pediatrician who now wants to offer supplemental newborn screening to his patients in Greenville, TX; and a lady who sells stork signs to new parents as a way for the family to announce their newest arrival. In addition to the signs, she distributes a packet of baby samples, and she took some of our pamphlets to include in her sample pack.

New this year is that many of the people who visited the booth already heard about supplemental newborn screening in childbirth education classes or from their pediatricians.

Discovery Health (the TV show) was there.  They, too, had heard about newborn screening before when they were at American Baby’s Baby Faire in April, 2003, where they visited Patty Blenet’s booth in Miami.  Laura seized the opportunity to encourage them to do a story on comprehensive newborn screening.

The booth crew also held a donation raffle, which raised a few more dollars ($122) to help educate more people about newborn screening, and encourage them to help save the lives of babies.

A woman from the national MOD attended and spoke with Laura. Laura broached the subject of MOD’s position of only screening for 9 disorders, stating that it wasn't enough. The woman agreed.

A lady from the marketing department of the Gerber Baby Food Company also attended the faire, affording another opportunity to educate yet another group about the benefits of newborn screening.

A wide array of people were educated and touched by the information shared by the crew running the booth. Educating is a noble cause and we at SBTS Foundation would like to say 'Thank You' to all who give of themselves and their time to run these booths.
