Newborn Screening Awareness Month
In order to bring a national spotlight to newborn screening and its detectable diseases, Save Babies Through Screening Foundation, along with several other NBS related groups, declared the month of September as National Newborn Screening Awareness Month . I t has been celebrated every September since the year 2000.

National NBS Awareness Month offers the opportunity to further inform the public of newborn screening which can prevent the serious complications of undiagnosed underlying disorders in children. The goal is to raise the awareness of NBS by the general public by continuous, ongoing education about newborn screening.

What You Can Do!
As we have often said, your personal stories – whether you are an affected individual, a family member or a friend – provide a unique perspective and are often the most effective tools in getting the public's attention. For your convenience, we have included some "Awareness Tools" below that can help get you started in spreading the word this September.

Wear Your NBS Awareness Lapel Pin – Wear your lapel pin every day in September to show your support of newborn screening. If you would like to order pins, please send check, money order or use PayPal by sending to paypal@savebabies.org. The price is $1 per pin to:

Distribute NBS Handouts & Posters – Distribute newborn screening handouts and posters in your community . . . at work, school, church, local businesses, hospitals, doctor's offices . . . the possibilities are endless. Handouts and posters can be ordered from the SBTS Foundation website.

NBS Awareness Month Sample Letter to Editor – Copy this text as a template to send a letter to the media in your area. Letters are also available as examples for sending information to your local Ob/Gyn offices and hospitals. In addition, SBTS Foundation has put together some helpful tips for writing letters to local officials and for doing interviews with the press.

Host A Fundraiser - The need for continued awareness of newborn screening has created another important need - funding. Raise awareness while you raise funds!

NBS Unity Quilt – Make a quilt panel to be included in our “Celebration of Rarity” quilt or arrange to have a display of the quilt panels in your community. The panels have appeared across the United States at numerous hospitals, businesses and conferences including the American Society of Pediatrics and National Society of Genetic Counselors conferences.

NBS Public Service Announcements – Contact your local radio, television, newspapers and magazines to have them run these important PSA's.

NBS Bill Flyers – (PDF File) Raise awareness when you pay your bills. Print and cut out these informative leaflets and stuff them in with your bills when you pay them.
